HP ProLiant Server Memory: What You Need to Know

Upgrading memory is one of the fastest ways to extend the life of an HP ProLiant server. But DDR4 modules are not one-size-fits-all: each ProLiant generation supports specific memory types, speeds and ranks.

1. RDIMM vs LRDIMM

RDIMM (registered DIMM) is the standard choice for ProLiant Gen9 and Gen10 servers, offering the best balance of capacity and cost. LRDIMM (load-reduced DIMM) allows higher capacities per slot but adds latency and costs more. Mixing RDIMM and LRDIMM in one server is not supported by HP.

2. Speed and voltage

ProLiant Gen10 servers support DDR4-2666 and DDR4-2933 modules; Gen9 supports DDR4-2133 and DDR4-2400. All ProLiant memory runs at 1.2V. When mixing speeds, the system runs at the lowest common speed, so match your new modules to the existing ones.

3. HP part numbers and population order

Genuine HP memory carries specific part numbers, and ProLiant boards enforce strict population order. Use HP's QuickSpecs or the server's Memory Configuration tool to verify before purchasing.
