Genuine vs Counterfeit Enterprise Drives

Enterprise hard drives are among the most counterfeited IT components. Fake drives not only fail early, they can take down a RAID array. Here is how to verify a genuine Dell, HP, IBM or NetApp drive before you buy.

1. Verify the part number

Every genuine drive has a manufacturer part number (e.g. Dell YP778 300GB 15K SAS, HP 654989-001, IBM 00WG665) printed on the label. Cross-check it with the vendor's official spare parts catalogue. Mismatched labels, missing FRU/PN stickers or re-printed labels are red flags.

2. Check the firmware

Genuine enterprise drives carry vendor-specific firmware. Tools like smartctl (smartmontools) can read the firmware revision, and vendor tools (Dell OpenManage, HP Smart Storage Administrator) will flag unsupported firmware on counterfeit units.

3. Inspect SMART data

Ask the seller for SMART health data: Power-On Hours, Reallocated Sector Count and Raw Read Error Rate. A "new" drive with high power-on hours has been used or refurbished.
